ORA, Oregon Gain New Portland Rheumatologist

Dr Lauren Kim joined the ranks of the Oregon Health & Sciences University Rheumatology department as an Assistant Professor of Medicine last June when she and her family decided to leave snowy Boston for a milder Portland, Oregon.

Our newest member earned her medical degree at State University of New York at Stony Brook. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency at Yale and her rheumatology fellowship at Boston University School of Medicine.

Dr Kim took a year off between her 2nd and 3rd year in medical school to get married and then to follow her husband to Burkina Faso, West Africa where he was doing his anthropology Ph.D. fieldwork. She volunteered at L'Hopital Yalgado's Department of Infectious Disease and also worked as an English instructor at the American Language Center in Burkina Faso.

Her family moved to the U.S. from Seoul, Korea in 1977 when she was 9. Dr Kim grew up in New York City but has spent most of her time since high school in Boston.

"So far," reported Dr Kim, "we love the city." She and her husband, Thomas have 2 children; a 4-year-old son James and a 1-year-old daughter Catherine. She enjoys cooking and travel but admits that she doesn't have time these days to do much of either.
