February Meeting at Embassy Suites Portland

The February meeting of the ORA will take place at the Portland Downtown Embassy Suites on Friday and Saturday, the 22nd-23rd.  The latest research in bone metabolism will be discussed from both a basic science and clinical perspective.  An ORA sponsored dinner and an evening at the theatre will follow on Saturday, the 23rd.

Dr Claude Arnaud, Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Psychology at UCSF is appropriately called one of the pioneers in the understanding of Bone Mineral metabolism.  From the early measurements of PTH by RIA to the present understanding of osteoporosis and complicated cytokine interactions, Dr Arnaud has been a major scientific investigator.  His voluminous publications, including numerous reviews, and his scientific honors place him in the center of osteoporosis research.

Clinical implications of this research, which will include the latest agents soon to be released, will be discussed by Dr Nancy Lane.

Dr Lane, Associate of Medicine and Rheumatology at the University of California, San Francisco will head this clinical and review. Dr Lane is well recognized as a leader in clinical bone metabolism research and has presented and moderated many ACR panels dealing with various aspects of Osteoporosis.  Active in the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research and numerous NIH/NIAMS study sections, Dr Lane promises to bring us the latest in clinical and cutting edge insights into Osteoporosis.  Other sessions include a "Thieves Market" of interesting and exotic clinical cases moderated by Dr. William Maier (contact him in Eugene if you have something unique).  Bringing us into the 21st century will be a session on Epocrates and the Palm Pilot where you will learn to "beam" the latest clinical references to your colleagues.  Epocrates in partnership with Centocor, will be providing ORA with an opportunity to be part of a pilot project with palm pilot technology.  There is a possibility of obtaining a free palm pilot as a part of the project.

Saturday’s entertainment includes an evening at the Portland Art Museum for "Triple Espresso", the premier off-Broadway show "where the once-promising comedy team of ‘Maxwell, Butternut & Bean’ is back for a reluctant 25th anniversary reunion" in a comedic explanation of the events that had this trio catapulted out of the lime-light.  Critics such as Sara Wellington rave "I can’t remember when I’ve laughed so hard for so long."Triple Espresso traces the trials of a once promising comedy team as they try to make a comeback after a two decade layoff".  Seattle reviews describe it as "wildly funny."
